Short answer: The fresher resume format that works in India in 2026 is one page, single column, exported as PDF, in this order: contact details, a two-line summary, education with degree, branch, year and CGPA, technical skills, two or three projects, internships, then certifications. Education sits near the top because Indian eligibility filters read degree, branch and percentage before a human opens the file. Leave out the photo, date of birth, father's name and declaration.
Most fresher resumes are rejected before a person reads them, and the reason is usually layout rather than ability. A two-column Canva template, a skills section built from rating bars, or a work-experience block padded with college fest roles all break the same thing: the parser cannot map your education and skills to the fields the recruiter is filtering on.
This guide gives the format, the section order, and a full one-page sample for a 2026 B.Tech graduate — the same structure works for B.Com, BBA, MCA and diploma holders with the sections renamed.
Why format decides so much for a fresher resume
Naukri's own resume guide states two figures worth knowing before you design anything: recruiters spend roughly seven seconds on a first scan, and about 75% of applications are rejected by applicant tracking systems before reaching a human (Naukri, 19 January 2026). Both numbers are Naukri's, not an audited industry benchmark, so treat them as directional — but the direction is consistent with what every Indian campus recruiter describes.
The pool you are competing in explains the rest. Around 110,000 freshers were hired into India's IT services sector in FY26, a record low, with Quess Group projecting 115,000 to 135,000 this fiscal year (Economic Times, 2 October 2026). On the wider IT-BPM definition, fresher hiring fell to about 1.75 lakh in FY26 from 4 lakh in FY22, and HAN Digital projects up to 2.1 lakh in FY27 (Economic Times, 14 October 2026). AICTE sanctioned 15.98 lakh B.Tech and B.E. seats for 2025-26 (AICTE data, reported by ET Education).
Fewer seats at the bottom of the funnel, in a much larger graduating cohort. When a recruiter is screening 400 applications for one opening, the resume that parses cleanly gets read first.
The section order that works in India
Naukri Campus's fresher guide uses a contact-to-extracurricular order with education third (Naukri Campus, 2026). For 2026 hiring, put education second and drop the objective for a two-line summary — here is the order that reflects how Indian eligibility filters actually run:
- Contact block — name, phone, professional email, city, LinkedIn, GitHub if you have one.
- Summary — two lines: who you are, what role you want, strongest proof.
- Education — degree, branch, college, university, graduation year, CGPA or percentage.
- Technical skills — grouped by category, standard product names only.
- Projects — two or three, each with stack, your contribution and an outcome.
- Internships — if you have any, even unpaid or college-arranged.
- Certifications and achievements — only the relevant ones.
The reason education comes before skills: most Indian fresher applications are first checked against hard eligibility rules — degree, branch, graduation year, minimum percentage. If those fields are buried on page two, the application is rejected by a filter that never reached your projects.

Built a REST API for a 4,000-title college library, used by two
departments. Java, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Docker.
Handled 1,200 requests per minute in a local load test with 40
concurrent users. Cut issue-return time from 3 minutes to 20 seconds.
Expense Splitter (web app) 2025
Group expense tracker with settlement calculation. React, Node.js,
MongoDB. Deployed on Render; 60 active users across two hostels.
INTERNSHIPS
Backend Developer Intern, Zoho (via college programme) Jun - Jul 2025
Built three REST endpoints for an internal reporting tool in Java.
Wrote unit tests raising module coverage from 41% to 78%.
Web Development Intern, local software firm Dec 2024
Rebuilt five responsive pages in React; reduced page load from
4.2s to 1.8s by compressing assets and lazy-loading images.
CERTIFICATIONS
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, 2026
NPTEL Programming in Java (Elite), 2025
That fits on one page at 10.5-point font with normal margins. Every claim on it can be defended: the load-test number came from a tool the candidate ran, the coverage figure came from the test report, and the two internships have named supervisors.
The education block: where Indian freshers lose the most
Four details do the work, and all four are checked later against your marksheets:
- Degree and branch, spelled the standard way. "B.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering" parses. "B.Tech (CSE)" often does not, because the parser is matching the long form.
- Graduation year. 2026, not "pursuing". Off-campus drives filter by batch year, and a missing year drops you out of the eligible set (see the off-campus drives guide for how those filters work).
- CGPA or percentage, exactly as issued. If your college issues both, give both: "CGPA 8.4/10 (79.9%)". Never round a 7.94 to 8.0 — offer letters are conditional on the marksheet.
- Backlogs. If you have none, "No active backlogs" is worth a line because some campus forms ask. If you have a history, the resume is not the place to narrate it; the eligibility form will ask, and you answer there.
On 10th and 12th marks: include them when they are strong, commonly above 80% or 8.0 CGPA. Below that, the degree line is what the eligibility filter reads and the school marks add nothing — except in campus placements and PSU or bank recruitment, where the application form asks for them separately anyway.
Projects: the section that replaces work experience
Two or three projects beat six. Each one needs four things on three lines:
- What it does, in plain language, one line.
- The stack, named.
- Your contribution — "built the authentication and payment webhook", not "worked on the project".
- An outcome with a number — users, requests per minute, minutes saved, accuracy. If you do not have a real number, describe the scale instead: "4,000 titles", "60 users", "five modules".
Tutorial clones are visible from the first line. If your project followed a course, say what you changed: a new feature, a different database, a deployment, a performance fix. That difference is the part an interviewer will ask about anyway.
Skills: exact tokens, grouped
List the technologies you can be tested on, grouped:
- Languages: Java, Python, JavaScript, SQL
- Frameworks: Spring Boot, Express.js, React
- Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB
- Tools: Git, Docker, Postman, AWS
Use the standard spelling of each product — "PostgreSQL", not "Postgres SQL"; "React", not "ReactJS"; "REST API", not "Restful APIs". Recruiter saved searches and ATS keyword maps match the standard token. Drop "MS Office", "internet browsing", "team player" and any skill with a star rating: rating bars have no machine-readable value, and they invite a comparison you cannot control.
What to leave out of an Indian fresher resume
None of these help, and three of them actively hurt parsing:
- Photo — private-sector Indian hiring does not expect one, and some companies now strip photos to reduce bias. PSU and bank applications that ask for one are separate forms.
- Date of birth, father's name, marital status, gender — you will be asked in the application form where it is legally required. The resume does not need it.
- "Declaration" — a paragraph saying the information is true, signed and dated. It occupies the last inch of a one-page resume and adds nothing.
- "References available on request" — assumed.
- Hobbies and interests — unless one is genuinely relevant to the role.
- A second page — for a fresher with no full-time experience, page two is padding, and it pushes the projects off the first scan.
- Salary expectation — never on the resume; it belongs in the screening call.
ATS rules for the PDF itself
The content can be perfect and still fail on layout. These are the formatting rules that trip Indian fresher applications most often:
- Single column, top to bottom. Two-column Canva layouts are read in the wrong order by older parsers, mixing your skills into your education.
- No tables, text boxes, headers or footers holding essential content. Some parsers drop everything inside a text box or a header.
- Standard section headings: Summary, Education, Skills, Projects, Experience, Certifications. "My Journey" or "What I Bring" does not map to a field.
- Font 10 to 11.5 point, Calibri, Arial or Times New Roman; margins 0.5 to 1 inch.
- Export to PDF from the editor, not a screenshot or a scanned printout. A PDF that is an image has no text layer and reads as a blank page.
- File name:
Priya_Ramesh_Resume.pdf. Recruiters download hundreds of files named "resume final final".
The six checks before you send
- Does it fit on one page without shrinking the font below 10 point?
- Is education in the top third, with degree, branch, year and CGPA on separate readable items?
- Does every project have a number, a stack and your specific contribution?
- Are all skill names in their standard spelling?
- Does a text search inside the PDF find your name, your college and "Java"? If not, the text layer is broken.
- Is the file a PDF named with your name, under 1 MB?
Run those six and the resume clears the mechanical filters. What decides the interview after that is keyword alignment with the specific job description — the resume keywords guide covers how to match without inventing anything, and the ATS resume checker walkthrough shows what the parser sees. If you have no internship at all, how to write a resume with no experience is the companion piece.
FAQ
How long should a fresher resume be in India?
One page. For a candidate with no full-time experience, a second page is almost always padding, and it pushes your projects and education further from the first scan. A one-page resume at 10.5 point with normal margins holds roughly 450 to 550 words, which is enough for two projects, one or two internships and a skills block.
Should a fresher resume have a photo in India?
No for private-sector applications. Indian corporate hiring does not expect a photograph, and several companies strip images during screening to reduce bias. Public-sector and bank recruitment usually has its own application form that asks for a photo separately — follow the form, not the resume.
What CGPA should I put on a fresher resume?
The exact CGPA your college issues, written as "8.4/10", plus the percentage if your college converts it. Do not round up: campus offers and background checks are conditional on the marksheet, and a 7.94 written as 8.0 is a discrepancy you will have to explain. If your CGPA is below 6.0, lead with projects and internships and keep the number accurate.
Do I need to include 10th and 12th marks on a fresher resume?
Only when they are strong — commonly above 80% or 8.0 CGPA — or when a campus or government application explicitly asks. For private-sector off-campus applications, the degree line carries the eligibility check, and weak school marks add nothing to a one-page resume.
Can I use a Canva resume template for Indian job applications?
Only a single-column one. Two-column templates, sidebars and icon-based skill sections are the most common cause of parsing failures, because the text extraction order does not follow the visual order. If the template puts your skills in a sidebar, rebuild it in a single column before you apply.
What file format should a fresher resume be in?
PDF, exported from the editor, unless the portal explicitly asks for DOCX. A PDF preserves the layout across machines, and a properly exported PDF keeps a text layer that parsers can read. Never send a scanned printout or a screenshot saved as PDF.
