HR Round Questions and Answers (India 2026)

Short answer: the HR round in India is not a personality test and it is not a formality. It is the last risk check before an offer is confirmed, and it tests four things: whether you will actually join, whether your documents match the story you have told, whether your salary number fits the band, and whether your current employer will release you in time. Fifteen questions come out of those four checks. Answer them so each risk disappears, and the round stops being a trap.

People who cleared four technical rounds still lose the job in a twenty-minute conversation with someone from HR who never asked them to write code. This is how that happens, and how to prevent it.

What is the HR round actually checking?

Not competence, and the evidence on that is unusually clear. In the 2022 re-analysis of selection-method validity by Sackett, Zhang, Berry and Lievens, the unstructured interview had a mean operational validity of 0.19 for predicting job performance, against 0.42 for a structured interview and 0.31 for cognitive ability tests (Journal of Applied Psychology, 107(11), 2040-2068). A late-stage conversation with no scoring rubric is a weak measure of how good you are at the job.

So it measures something else: whether the offer will survive contact with reality. Careernet data reported by The Hindu BusinessLine in 2026 found the average gap between accepting an offer and joining in India is 30 to 33 days, and 29 to 31% of hires took 60 days or more to join after accepting. Executive search firms quoted by Business Today in August 2026 put withdrawal at nearly one in three senior candidates before an offer is finalised, most often during the final interview rounds.

The interviewer is not deciding whether you are impressive. They are deciding whether you are safe to make an offer to.

Check The real question Where it shows up
Joining risk Will you still be here on the joining date? Notice period, other offers, reason for leaving
Consistency risk Do your documents match your CV? Exact dates, gaps, salary proof, relieving letters
Compensation fit Does your number fit the approved band? Current CTC, expected CTC, flexibility
Logistics Can you work where and when the job needs? Relocation, shifts, travel, joining date

The four numbers that end up in your offer letter

In India the HR round is where four fields get recorded and then reused by payroll, by the offer letter and by the background verification agency.

Field What they record What breaks the offer
Current CTC Fixed pay and variable separately Inflating it, when Form 16 and PF records disagree
Expected CTC One number or a range against a band "As per company norms", which gives them nothing to match
Notice period Days, and whether a buyout is possible Saying 90 days flat when they need someone in 30
Location and shift Base city, relocation, working hours Discovering the shift after the offer

Two of these are negotiable. Current CTC is not: it is a fact that will be verified. Decide the other three before the call starts.

The 15 questions, grouped by what they are testing

Will you actually join?

1. Tell me about yourself. Sixty to seventy-five seconds, three beats: what you do now and at what scale, one number that proves it, why this role is the next step. Skip the degree and the hometown. The answer is checked for coherence with what you told the technical panel.

2. Why are you leaving your current company? Answer forward, not backward. "The work has moved to maintenance and I want to stay on distributed systems" is safe. "My manager plays favourites" tells the interviewer you will say that about them in eighteen months.

3. What is your notice period, and when can you join? Give a date, not a policy. "Ninety days, so my last working day is 2 February and I can start on 5 February" is an answer. "As per company norms" makes the recruiter do arithmetic they will not do.

4. Can you get an early release? Say what you have already asked for and what your manager said, not what you hope happens. The notice period buyout guide has the exact language and the cost arithmetic for a 45-day shortfall.

5. Are you holding any other offers? Never bluff. If you have one, name the stage and the decision date and do not run an auction. If you do not, "this is my active search and I can decide within a week" beats a vague maybe.

Do your documents match your story?

6. Walk me through your employment history with exact dates. Month and year for every stint, in order. Keep a one-page timeline open during the call. Most date problems are not lies but memory: people round a 14-month stint to a year and create a gap they then have to explain.

7. Why is there a gap between these dates? One sentence of fact, one of what you did with the time, then stop. Over-explaining is what makes a gap sound like a problem. The career gap guide covers the six-month-plus version.

8. Your current CTC is different from what we see in the portal. Why? Because "CTC" is a package, not a salary. Separate fixed pay, variable, joining bonus and ESOPs, and lead with fixed. This question exists because verification will pull your Form 16 and PF passbook, and they would rather resolve it now than after you resign.

9. Do you have your relieving letters, PF passbook and education certificates? Answer honestly, including the awkward case. If a previous employer has shut down or a relieving letter was never issued, say so now and list what you do have: appointment letter, payslips, PF record. Discovering it at verification stage delays offers by weeks.

10. Are you comfortable with background verification? Yes, then name the one item you expect to flag: a short stint left off an early CV, a designation that differed from the letter, a cash component. Volunteering it turns a discrepancy into a known fact. AuthBridge's Workforce Fraud Files for H1 FY26 recorded a 4.33% overall discrepancy rate among white-collar hires, with employment verification at 11.15% and CV validation in IT at 12.80% (AuthBridge, 2026, via The Economic Times). Roughly one in nine employment checks does not match. Assume yours is being run.

Does the money fit the band?

11. What is your current CTC? Fixed and variable separated, in lakh. Never inflate it: the chain runs through Form 16, the PF passbook and the bank statement, and an inflated number becomes a discrepancy at the worst possible moment.

12. What is your expected CTC? A range with a floor you would accept, anchored to the role rather than to a percentage. If you do not know the band, ask for it before you answer: "what range has been approved for this role?" is a normal question and most recruiters answer it. If a large part of your package is variable, read how CTC and in-hand salary differ before you quote.

13. Are you flexible on salary? Flexibility is a trade, not a discount. "Flexible on fixed if the variable, level or joining date moves with it" keeps the conversation open without dropping your number. What kills the offer is agreeing lower here and asking for more after the letter is issued.

Can you work here?

14. Tell me about a disagreement with a manager or teammate. One story, ninety seconds: situation, what you wanted, what they wanted, what you did, what changed. End on the part you got wrong, because the question is testing self-correction. The STAR answer bank has twelve worked examples.

15. Are you willing to relocate, work shifts, or travel? Answer the real question, which is whether you will still be there in a year. If your answer is conditional, give the condition now: "yes for a Bengaluru base, and I would need three months for the family to move." A condition stated before the offer is a constraint; the same condition after joining is a resignation.

What not to do in the last ten minutes

  • Do not bad-mouth the current employer, even when invited. The invitation is the test.
  • Do not invent a competing offer. Timelines get checked, and a false one ends the process.
  • Do not say "any salary is fine". It reads as desperation or inexperience and guarantees a low anchor.
  • Do not leave the joining date vague. "One month" and "60 days" are different dates on a calendar.

Fresher or experienced: what changes

For a fresher, this round is logistics and coachability: relocation, shifts, joining date, documents, and one behavioural question. Money is usually a fixed fresher band that does not move. The fresher interview question bank covers that version.

Past three years, the same questions get harder in two places. The notice period becomes the deciding constraint, because a team that needs someone in 30 days will not wait 90. And expected CTC becomes a negotiation against a band rather than a slab. That is where experienced candidates lose offers they had already earned.

What to ask them before you leave

In the Indeed Hiring Confidence Index for India, commissioned between May and June 2026 across 1,073 job seekers and 735 employers, the strongest drivers of confidence were clear salary expectations (37%), transparent timelines (35%) and clear selection criteria (28%); the biggest frustration, named by 29%, was no response at all.

Ask, in this order: the approved range and the fixed-versus-variable split; the next step and when you will hear; the joining date they are working towards given your notice; and who your reporting manager will be.

FAQ

How many questions are asked in an HR round in India?

Usually ten to twenty, and most are variations on four themes: joining risk, document consistency, salary fit and logistics. Fifteen is a fair planning number, but six prepared answers cover most of them.

Is the HR round a formality, or can I fail it?

You can fail it, and it is a common place for a successful candidacy to end. The failure is rarely about personality. It is an inconsistent date, an inflated CTC, a notice period that does not fit the project, or an expectation outside the band.

What should I say when asked for my expected CTC?

Give a range with a floor you would accept, anchored to the role rather than to your current package, and ask for the approved band if you do not know it. Quote fixed pay separately from variable.

Do Indian companies verify current salary and documents?

Yes, usually after the offer: employment dates, designation, salary and education. AuthBridge, which says it runs about 15 million verification checks a month, recorded a 4.33% overall discrepancy rate among white-collar hires in H1 FY26, with employment verification at 11.15% (AuthBridge, 2026).

Can I negotiate salary in the HR round?

Often yes, because in many Indian companies this is where the offer is built rather than announced. Negotiate on the whole package: variable, joining bonus, notice-period buyout, designation and joining date are all movable. Negotiate once, before the letter is issued, not after.
