Short answer: A referral ask works when it costs the other person under two minutes. Send one short message naming the exact role and job ID, plus a paste-ready block with the six fields every Indian referral portal asks for: resume, current CTC, expected CTC, notice period, location, and the email you will register with. Send it before you apply, not after, because most referral portals cannot attach a referral to an application that already exists.
The instinct when a referral goes unanswered is that the message was too blunt. Usually it is neither. The ask died because the referrer opened it on a phone, realised they would have to reply three times for the details, then fill eight fields in an internal portal for a stranger — and put it down.
Why do referrals still work in India in 2026?
On Info Edge's Q2 FY26 earnings call, Naukri's own leadership described the Indian market as hiring through online platforms, LinkedIn and referrals, with only a small share from private databases (Info Edge, 2026). The country's largest job board is saying referrals sit alongside Naukri, not beneath it.
The conversion data is consistent across the largest datasets. Ashby, across nearly 250,000 hires from 2021 to 2025, found referrals were about 18% of hires from roughly 1% of applications (Ashby, 2025). In one large corporation studied by the New York Federal Reserve, referred applicants were 6% of applicants but 29% of hires (NY Fed, Staff Report 568). Gem's 2026 benchmarks put referral conversion at 11x inbound applicants (Gem, 2026).
The pool keeps growing. Naukri JobSpeak for August 2026 put white-collar hiring up 14% year on year, with AI and machine learning roles up 31% (Naukri JobSpeak, September 2026) — more applicants per opening, same 1% referral share that skips the queue.
What a referral does not do
It does not skip the test, the interview, eligibility criteria or background verification.
At Infosys the referral route adds a step before the standard application rather than replacing it: the employee submits your profile internally first, then you apply externally with the same email address. The aptitude test and interview rounds are identical (Faceprep, 2026). At TCS NQT-style pipelines the assessment is the filter — a referral moves you up the queue to sit it, not past it.
What a referral buys is visibility and speed: your resume tagged, routed to a human, read in days instead of weeks. Worth real money. Not a shortcut through the bar.
Why the order of operations decides whether your ask lands
Most people apply first and ask second. In India that order usually kills the referral.
Most referral portals require the employee to submit your details before an application exists. If you have already applied through the careers page, the referral often cannot be attached — the employee has to raise a ticket, or you withdraw and reapply. Most will not bother, and you will never be told. The order that works: find the role, find the person, ask, wait a few days, then apply yourself only if they do not respond.
The same-email rule matters too. If your referrer submits one address and you register with another, the records never merge and the referral becomes a note nobody reads.
Who should you ask for a referral?
Ask in this order — roughly the likelihood each says yes, not the order most people use.
- Seniors from your own college, same branch, one to four years into the job. They remember being where you are, the bond is strong in India, and they are junior enough that referring you costs no political capital. This is the tier almost everyone skips.
- Former interns or trainees you overlapped with.
- People from your hometown or state at the target company.
- Anyone who has publicly posted that they are open to referring. Indian LinkedIn is full of these. Take them at their word.
- A stranger whose work you have actually engaged with — an open-source project, a talk, a blog post you replied to.
Seniority changes what the referral is worth. One 2026 analysis of Indian hiring describes submissions as internally tiered: a standard employee-portal entry ranks lowest, one where the employee certifies they worked directly with you ranks higher, and a hiring manager messaging the recruiter directly ranks highest — with only the upper tiers reliably getting human evaluation (Nityaved, How Indian Companies Actually Hire in 2026). Treat the tiers as one consultancy's description of practice. The direction holds: a junior who knows your work beats a senior forwarding a stranger's PDF.
What should you send with a referral request?
All six fields, in the first message, in a block the referrer can copy. This is the single change that turns a dead ask into a submitted referral.
| Field | Send exactly this | Why the portal wants it |
|---|---|---|
| Resume | One PDF named Firstname_Lastname_Role.pdf, one page under 6 years of experience | The portal uploads the file a recruiter will actually open |
| Current CTC | Fixed and variable split separately, in LPA | Indian portals usually require both; one number gets queried |
| Expected CTC | A range with a stated floor, marked negotiable | The referrer is often asked to justify the band |
| Notice period | Days, not "two months": 30, 60 or 90, plus buyout availability | The most common automated knockout filter |
| Location | Current city, plus whether you will relocate | Recruiters filter by base location before reading |
| Email and phone | The same email you will register on the careers portal with | A mismatch detaches the referral from your application |
Add two links under the block: the exact job requisition and your Naukri profile. The Naukri URL is what an Indian recruiter opens first, so the headline and key skills must match the role — the profile headline guide covers the phrasing, and the 11 fields that decide your Naukri ranking covers the rest.
The five messages
Keep the connection request almost empty. The 2025 Belkins/Expandi dataset of 11.5 million LinkedIn connection requests found acceptance was 26.4% with a note and 26.4% without — the note changes nothing about whether you get in. It changes what happens next: reply rate after acceptance was 9.36% with a note against 5.44% without, a 72% difference (Belkins, 2025).
So get accepted with a near-empty invite, then put the ask in the first message. SmartReach's 2026 report found replies to connection notes fell from 3.5% to 2.2% in a year — people accept, then ignore the note.
Template 1 — College senior, first message after they accept
Hi <name>, I'm a <branch> graduate from <college>, <year> batch. I saw you're on the <team> team at <company>. There's an opening for <role> (job ID <id>) that matches my last <N> years. Would you be open to referring me? Everything you'd need is below so it's one form for you — and no problem at all if not.
[paste the six fields]
Template 2 — Former colleague or intern batchmate
Hi <name>, we worked together on <project> at <company> in <year>. I'm looking at the <role> opening (job ID <id>). Would you be willing to put me through the referral portal? Details below so you don't have to chase me for anything.
Template 3 — Cold, with a work hook
Hi <name>, I read your post on <specific thing> and used the same approach on <your version>. I'm applying for <role> at <company> (job ID <id>). If you're open to referring, here's everything the form asks for. If not, no hard feelings — the post was useful either way.
Template 4 — The day-five follow-up, the one that gets replies
Hi <name>, following up once on the <role> referral — I know portal forms are a pain. If it's easier, I can send a single PDF with everything in the right order. And if now isn't a good time, just say so and I'll stop chasing.
One follow-up, five working days later, then stop. A second chaser converts almost nobody and costs you the contact you will want for the next role.
Template 5 — After it lands
Thanks <name>, I got the confirmation. I'll take it from here and won't bug you unless something changes. If it works out I owe you a proper one.
Then follow through. Referral bonuses at Indian firms are typically paid only after the hire completes probation — commonly 90 days — so the referrer has a live interest in your first three months.
What gets you filtered out before a human reads the referral?
The referral queue is not a human queue. One 2026 analysis of Indian hiring describes the ATS tagging the profile as an employee referral, then running it against hard knockout rules — salary threshold, maximum notice period, minimum experience, skill match. Failing any of them routes the resume to the rejected folder and the referrer is never told (Nityaved, 2026).
Three levers matter more than any wording:
- Notice period. A maximum-notice filter is common, and at product firms and GCCs the ceiling is often 30 days. If you carry a 90-day notice, say what you can actually do — early release, buyout, or a negotiated shorter date. The notice period buyout guide covers how to raise it without weakening your position.
- Expected CTC band. Inflating it to "leave room to negotiate" gets you knocked out before the conversation starts. If your number is genuinely above the posted range, say so plainly.
- Skill-keyword match. The knockout compares your resume text to the requisition. Mirror the job description's own nouns — the same discipline that decides whether your Naukri profile surfaces at all.
FAQ: Asking for a referral in India
Should I ask for a referral before or after applying?
Before. Most Indian referral portals need the employee to submit your profile first, and a referral often cannot be attached to an application that already exists. Find the role, ask the person, wait a few working days, then apply yourself if you hear nothing. Use the same email address in both places.
How do I ask a stranger on LinkedIn without it feeling awkward?
Make the ask small and specific, and give them an easy exit. "Would you be open to referring me for job ID 12345? Everything the form needs is below, and no problem if not" is easier to answer than a paragraph about how much you admire the company. Awkwardness comes from ambiguity about what you want.
How long should I wait after asking for a referral?
Five working days, then one follow-up, then stop. Referral forms get buried under actual work, and one polite nudge recovers a meaningful share. A fourth chase does not, and it costs you the contact.
Do referrals guarantee an interview in India?
No. They guarantee your profile is tagged, routed and read faster. At Infosys the aptitude test and rounds are unchanged, and mass pipelines at TCS and Wipro are built around the assessment as the filter (Faceprep, 2026). Background verification and eligibility criteria are unaffected.
Do referrals matter for freshers in India?
Less at mass recruiters, more at product firms. At TCS NQT, Infosys and Wipro drives the assessment is the gate. At product companies, GCCs or startups hiring off-campus, a referral from a college senior two years ahead is often the difference between being read and filtered (start with a clean fresher resume format).
